Exception Notifier plugin is a great plugin. As a manager I ensure every crash is reported, analyzed and fixed.

I have few thousand mails which I have collected from exception notifier.

I have sorted the bugs by

controller

model

helper

views

gems

libraries

db (bad sql/connection/migration/

file(file not found/ file permissioning/file upload)

nil class

exception not properly handled

browser specific errors

we also do logging within application to know response time by for different actions.

we have a bug/request tracking system where we have over 300 tickets handled in last 3 months.

we have reduced the crashes and bugs by 95%(from Jan 2007) and are now optimising

optimisation we were able to reduce the query by over 90%. by caching query results, improving algorithms.

with nearly 2000 commits in a year, we have learnt a lot about Rails and programming practices.

it has been a great learning experience.

each bug is potentially "how not to" program exercise :)

Amazon EC2 startups and scalability

I have been investigating EC2 for over 2 months now.

after many years I am doing R&D and installations on linux.

we are seriously considering EC2/S3 for scaling for our startup.

Here is what my friend Dinesh, sent me just today.

We have been friends for over 3 years now, and we would discuss issues, ideas and other things. We would have brainstormed about over 50 concepts for startup we wanted to build.

things have changed a bit, we still discuss projects . but now I work for a startup, and Dinesh manages a Ruby on Rails, development firm. hope of some of our ideas would come out as viable projects in 2007.

When did the basic spark about this character come to you?

Most ideas remain inside you for a while. You tell somebody when there is a spark or a thought, and leave it at that. You come back later, write down a few lines. I makes note in my mind on whether it can be made into a film or not. After a while, you take it again and structure it in three or four pages and see whether it becomes a story, and whether you can define the characters a little more. Then you may do something else, and come back after 6 months or one year to see whether it still makes sense to you. Only when things fall into place do you make a film. The gestation period could be something like 3 years.

Buddha the CM of west bengal, an Communist bastion, has brought lot of changes to his state. state now does not sponsor strikes and labour problem, it is trying to show an IT friendly image. but yesterday they bagged an project competing from another state, though it is an achievement, but a controversy is brewing as it had snatched it from Kerala where communists are in power.

I lived in Bhubaneshwar, 6 months Ago. The trouble had started then itself, A budhia a small boy consider a prodigy by most people, he dont tires and can run upto 60 kms in a single stretch.
the only guy who dont want the boy and his coach, should get any publicity, fame or sponsorship at all.

Orissa govt has gone extreme steps to prove the child is malnutritioned, is unhealthy, unfit to run. it is using state health ministry and machinery to do so.

the boy cannot run anymore in his birth state orissa. govt also ensured he does not get a chance to run in bangalore.

Rake migrate

I am creating a new application. When I type the following in
the cmd prompt the get a error;

c:\>ruby>app>ruby db:migrate

Error:
rake aborted!
no such file to load --postgres

Please give me some idea abt resolving it.

Hi Daniel,

never faced such problems,

normal usage is

rake migrate

which uses development environment settings for connecting to db

if you want to migrate on production environment use this

rake migrate RAILS_ENV=production

hope this helps.

if you still have issues, give relevant contents from database.yml, and
environment.rb

will try to help

you seem to be using windows and error shows postgres, hope it is not
different database in development and production :)

I am getting something similar, and do not know what do.

am getting stuck right at the beginning of creating the Depot
application.

I am running on Windows XP, and have installed Ruby via InstantRails
(1.0 final).

Any help greatly appreciated -- as I am stuck and cannot proceed.

please run following command on your app

ruby script/about

please confirm you have followed the procedure

1) you have created a rails project
2) configured db
3) use migrations for creating models
4) you have a file "Rakefile" in your rails project directory
5) you are running "rake" in your rails project directory

now please tell about your os, and mysql version,
can you connect to mysql with with phpmyadmin.

if you cannot sort out the issue, please paste the output of "ruby
script/about" will investigate

I had been hearing about RJS from laste december, when it finally arrived with rails 1.1, I wanted to try my hands with it.

but there was no single source, who went beyond the basics.

cody fauser has done a excellent job with this book.

step by step approach. not overwhelming you with too much information.

author starts with a simple thought_log , a "to do" style app.

+ve
1) all code can be cut and pasted, and works clean

2) proper explanations

3) advanced features shown and covered(I have not yet seen it on any other blog), eg.
a) debugging RJS, scriptaculous with firebug firefox plugin
b)javascript callbacks for Ajax requests
c) model validations and showing errors with RJS
d) RJS refactoring
e)Ajax Global Responders

-ve
1) small typo's exist,
a) page 25 -> app/views/new.rjs should be app/views/expenses/new.rjs
b) page 31 views/expenses/_form.rhtml should be views/expenses/_new.rhtml as there are no form partial.

2) if sam stephenson had added few notes on design considerations while designing RJS, it would have been another gem for every rails user

I have tested and succeeded with more RJS in last 2 hours than the last few months searching and testing code from blogs.

overall rating, if you are a self learner, a very good buy,

thank you, for calling me a prolific poster :)

lighttpd vs mongrel

you cant compare apples with oranges

apache and lighttpd are web servers they just serve files

rails is a ruby app which need to be run with some runner

the common runners are

CGI(dead slow, never attempt on production)
FCGI(a faster CGI implementation which loads the app in memory and caches it)
SCGI(A new and supposedly better FCGI style app )
Mongrel(It is a new type of app which uses direct HTTP protocol to run the ruby on rails app)

mongrel is done by Zed Shaw the same guy who did SCGI.

mongrel is still under major development, but has its advantages, you can get IIS to serve ruby on rails with a simple reverse proxy.

this reverse proxy logic can work with any webserver and platform, and using http can boost the scalability of applications.

once it starts beating other competitors with performance and speed, it will dominate in the hosting arena.

we have tested various combinations, apache with fcgi, apache with scgi, apache with mongrel, lighttpd with fcgi.

so now you would have understood that you need to run both lighttpd and mongrel together, but on clustered load balanced environment, you can run mongrel on seperate servers if your budget permits

Capistrano

capistrano, is a deployment tool which can save you hundreds of hours, if you have a continuosly evolving application which is live

rails is not simple php app which once files are updated changes its behaviour.

ruby on rails application deployment steps. ( especially customer facing applications)

setup you server,
checkout the latest release from your version control system
make DB migrations if any
take backups
clear stale sessions
restart your rails runner
if something goes bad undo the actions

the complexity will grow one you have to do deployment across multiple servers, seperate db, application, rails runners

if you want to automate it capistrano is the solution, it can work even for non rails application(php,perl,python etc).

capistrano uses ssh for securely connecting to different servers and execute some batch scripts.

currently servers can be only linux/*nix based, also has few assumption on same username passwords across all servers

my personal site is on version 86, my office site on version 450+, we are now confident with capistrano, we can deploy our apps in under 2 minutes on production, so even if a small fix or feature addition is made, we take it live quickly.

capistrano with rails brings Agile application development benifits for the masses

once capistrano is configured properly(you need to do it once i the beginning, later maybe when you move to newer servers or go cluster), the only command you need to execute on my console is

rake deploy

hi claudio,
the virtual appliance was planned to have and run multiple rails applications.

the only way a rails application can be distinguished within a web server is through a app name, if you run a application on a server you will find they are all run on a domain or a sub-domain.

we are just utilising those facts, there is a workaround available but it is diffcult and unnatural.

all you need to do is have names for your project and add those to virtual host entries on lighttpd, we have already created a virtual entry for rforum as rforum.tmp so that it does not sound like a real domain :)

you also need to add it to your hosts file, as no DNS entry is available. pasting the instructions for windows, IP for your virtual appliance will be something like 192.*.*.* any class C address which you configured.

add the following DNS entries in your hosts file ()
c:\windows\system32\drivers\etc\hosts
IP rforum.tmp"

Benefits of this approach is we are able to run multiple applications on a singe instace of virtual appliance, we have tested this in running multiple versions of same app, in production and development environment

I prefer PDF/chm based ebooks over their paper counterparts as they are easier to search and copy-paste.

Agile Web Development with Rails : A Pragmatic Guide

by Dave Thomas, David Hansson, Leon Breedt, Mike Clark, Thomas Fuchs, Andrea Schwarz
(The Facets of Ruby Series) (Paperback) 610 pages

The first rails published book, also for newbies it is their first Ruby on Rails book

this book has won this years award for best technical book

Any rails enthusiast will go through many sources and references before buying a book to settle down. The first book generally is "agile development with rails" as it is highly advertised by rails site, rails developers and 37 signals themselves.

this book would get you the feel of what is possible with Rails, first version was based on Rails .14, then came second version for rails 1, but by then rails 1.1 was launched, so it became a bit redundant, but after readers like me asked for an update, they have a beta book with rails 1.1 with rails coverage, have got the book, but not yet read it completely

if you are a experienced programmer who has worked on MVC before, know or used Agile practices, you can safely leave first few sections, "introduction"
and "getting started"

third section "building an application" is where action starts, you build a shopping cart completely and they call it the Depot application, second edition brings in Ajax into shopping cart, while the original one was form based.

I would suggest replicate the steps given by teh users, dont try too apply too much logic on how rails works at this stage, just play along.

once you cross 75% of the app you start getting questions on how Activerecords work and how to use your own logic.

Rails framework is covered in detail in "Part III -The Rails Framework", the only part of the book ehich I still frequently refer is this area.

I would rate this book 9/10

if you are planning a switch to ruby on rails, this will not be your last book, you will be referring only "Part III -The Rails Framework" frequently

once your initall apps start working , you need to learn new tricks to impress your colleagues or boss, go for "Rails Recipe"

Active records ouside rails will be useful for many developers, I got started that way only.

I have not yet completed this section yet, may find a gem or two

lot has been already written on this book, and most ruby developer would vouch for it.

but I am not impressed with this book

it did not get me anywhere when I was writing my first Ruby App (you read it right Ruby not rails), My app is a DSL for domain registrars( I work for Broadspire, a LA based web hostng company which is also an ICANN approved registrar ) it uses and XML based API called EPP, for interacting with domain registry's. I needed to build XML commands, send xml commands over ssh (we had bought SSL certificates), process returned XML.

I was better off with class api docs at rubycentral and for other code rubyforge.

lets reserve 50% seats for reserved people on flight and train , cinema theatres, hospitals, events.

India hardly makes any achievement in most competitive categories.

lets make 50% reserved candidates mandatory in our cricket. once we will start losing all games, people will stop watching cricket for good, all Sponsors will stop paying, let BCCI get bankrupt. Hardly anyone watches hockey or football , I mean the national team.

lets make 50% ceiling on govt to spend on upliftment of downtrodden. Lets ensure reserved people pay taxes proportional to their proportional strength.

lets bring law for making education mandatory.

Parents not sending to school should be punished with minimum life imprisonment they are getting their whole future generation, eligible for reservation, But do we have enough Jails.

government schools where pass percentage less than 70% teachers should be terminated.

that is only in Engineering after private colleges were allowed, we have surplus seats now(few thousand vacant for past few years)

thats not the case with Medicine, let the govt allow every 500 bed hospital to have its own medical/dental/pharmacy college. there would be surplus there too.

it is not about motives of the people who implement it or support it, it is the consequences that will be faced by merituous students.

earlier government was the largest employer, reservation has been made there, now it has fewer new vacancies.

now government also wants reservation in private sectors also

there is no time limit set for withdrawal of reservations, so there is no motive for people getting reservations to be merituous.

I have heard proposals for promotions based on reservations, recruitment in defence forces based on reservations

if government does not mend its ways, India is going to be another France where emloyers cant fire an employee easily, so they seldom hire, which has led to highest unemployment rates in europe.

just saw an article on Rediff that govt has constituted a comnittee to look into the reservation issue.

The committee includes B Mungekar, member, Planning Commission; R Mashelkar, director general, CSIR; S K Thorat, UGC chairman; R A Yadav, vice chairman, AICTE; N K Ganguly, director general, ICMR; G Mohan Gopal, former VC, National Law School and R V Vaidyanatha Ayyar, former secretary.

the government also appointed three groups to go into specific details about universities and institutes regarding the course of action for giving effect to the OBC quota in a time-bound manner

The Group for Technological/Engineering institutions will be headed by M Anandakrishnan, former vice chancellor of Anna University. use vmplayer to boot the Rails Appliance

it uses DHCP for IP configuration.
to view the IP address of this machine, run the cmd
$ ifconfig eth0

Manmohan Singh government is forcibly implementing 27% reservation for Other Backward Classes in Central educational institutes from june 2007.

they have not consulted with the affected students, whose future they are going to jeopardise.

they have started taking regressive measures like dismissing residents doctors who are striking and started conducting interviews.

manmohan singh government will fall if any or combination of following happens

1) students protest engulfs all states and school / college students from arts/science/engineering students join the protest

2) stock market crashes to 4000-6000 level, (yes it is possible) once FII start believing, Indias has no future as a so called forward looking prime minister Manmohan Singh is not even uttering a word against it.

3) intellects, filmstars, and common people start supporting the students cause

4) labour unions start support students cause

5) President of India Dr. Abdul Kalam dismisses the government, if the strikes becomes law and order problem, and government mismanages it. Mmost probably it will mismanage with its incompetent minsters and a prime minister who cannot manage/control his cabinet

Anti Reservation Petition

Are you aware of the latest proposal of Ministry of HRD (Govt. of India)? They are planning to increase the quota of reserved seats by 27% which will make the reserved seats to 49.x%... leaving barely 50% seats to be filled on the basis of merit.

Are you ready to face the fact that - Our half of our nation will be nurtured not on the basis of merit but some other considerations?

Instead of giving reservation the Govt. can give free education or scholarship to the backwards if they get a seat. But seat should be given on merit only. If you really care for your future and against the reservation system in India then do check the following link.

google has become a big boys toy,

for startups like me and you, the ads what we get on the so called context sensitive ads is 'pathetic' in general to 'average' at best

the keywords and the bid is for low priced ads, which is one of the reason we dont make much.

as of date I have made less than 1$ on adsense(my last 15 days performance).

but have now found the main why we dont get better ads, the reason is keywords, you need to analyse the keywords and the ads what we get.

some of the people who have understood those are selling them as ebooks

Have identified some good keywords for my site.

But they are not very effective for blogs

REASON: we have many articles with different themes, so number of keyword and the density goes up and causes the mismatch of ads

writing my own code to tweak the performance of my articles.

got some initial sucess, but will not be depending exclusively on it anymore

we need to have a right mix of revenue sources

we need to have CPM, CPC and CPA ads

1) enough CPM revenue to sustain our sites

2) enough CPC revenue to grow our site

3) CPA is our bonus

yet to get a good cpm ad for my site ,as i dont want , adult, gmabling and other kind of ads, which i dont want my site to be associated with

also for CPA Ads we dont have metrics for effectiveness of CTR so developing a clicktracking, and ad rotation myself

I also think we need a exclusive CPM advertisers for blogs

I do not agree with you a bit.

it is my 10th year on the net. have seen and used, lynx, mosaic, netscape, internet explorer, opera, mozilla and firefox.

opera was always a fringe player, will remain so. I am not happy with the plugin architecture and its extensionbility. I agree it was the first compact standard compliant browser.

maybe you should compare it with niche product like safari on Mac

we all knew Netscape was killed by AOL for Microsoft.

the mozilla team in its new avataar, is doing a good job, after few iterations of firefox, Micrsoft will wakeup to find a formiddable competitor.

i am regularly using firefox, thunderbird on windows and linux.

if you see your stats or any other stats, opera is not in top 3 browser.

Hi, article was interesting and thought provoking.

what php has achieved without any godfather company backing is really great(java-sun, .net- microsoft, IBM etc).

i work for a micro multinational, php has given my organisation the parity to take on bigger competitors. with off the shelf regular webservers, are able to do manage a million hits a day, all ecommerce.

the same implementation on java, microsoft ,ibm, oracle or any other platform would have costed atleast 30-100 times more on licensing, hardware , support costs alone. Long live PHP.

recently heard, mysql was dumped from php5 as big blue offered in some megabucks for php to support its db technologies

let different people have different opinions how to achieve a goal, thats what freedom of speech and expression is all about.

let us discuss how we get our points to the world and get our genuine concerns, be taken care of by lawmakers.

whats against us?

1) no party has publicly opposed the reservation.
2) we dont have referrundums for policies
3) it is very difficult to repeal laws
4) media and politicians are trying to put our objections and protest of few medical students and upper cast people
also earlier this month PM was asking industry to have reservation in private sector.

we need oppose both and have a medium term stratergy

lets learn how they do it in US and other countries save the internet is on such site, which oppose net neutrality act.

I would suggest we create more media interest and also have our site with more media interest content, use your mobile cams, take photos, videos interview people, we will get all hosted on our site and also youtube(video), flickr(photos).

I will do my best to get max attention for our site on blogs and sites

I am a great fan of Watir, but I do not use it for all the work, as it becomes slower.

For my company's new site, which is on rails, I had to do link validations and also analysis of links, keywords, page size etc.

I used Ruby WWW::Mechanize, to build a custom bot to identify and crawl all pages, and collect statistics

Results: my site has 120+ pages and 7000+ internal links, 50+ external links, this includes content from our CMS.

also it found few broken links, which we were able to fix.

webserver logs, website tracking tools are useful for analysis

I use Watir for small testing tasks like authentication, js bugs, screenshots.

in my early programming career, have attempted it, but there are far too many formats, standards and gotchas.

i am not discouraging you,

limited set of formats for specific needs is more viable, ming(flash) and pure php/ruby pdf implementation are sucessful examples.

write some code which you would love to use, which solves a immediate problem instead of a percieved furture need

start with least resistance path, get your stuff working, you can always do Refactoring later

you can always extract the core code and package it as plugin/gem later(like they did rails itself)

Rails is cool because it was done by programmers for their project and not for fellow programmers or to be academically correct.

if you are developing web application, I would suggest you to read "Getting Real" from 37 signals, it is a refreshing jargon free book.

In the previous meeting, he took cover saying that he will talk after the elections, and now he is hiding behind the Cabinet.

You have got a New Project / Order for which your customer wants a new features , which It is not your competency.

the choice before you is

a) convince the client that it is not possible/required
b) You can learn it yourself, buy the licence for neccesary tools, do the job
c) Recruit a specialist in that field, buy the licence for neccesary tools, do the job

I can give reasons why the above 3 solutions may not be always practical

a) never do it, the client may leave you and go for other people who can do it

b) not always practical, you are supposed to get the the task done not do it yourself, your management will be the first to object for this solution

c) hiring is not a solution if you do not expect enough long term projects for justifying creation of a vacancy, also it is
i) a time consuming process from giving job ad to paying recruitment consultant to training the new hand with your way of work, ii) Salary benefits, relocation etc iii) Software license cost for 3d, animation and few other specialities are prohibitively expensive

You gave 3 solutions and say all 3 may not work, what is the alternative then.
Get it done outside(your company) it could be a freelancer / consultant / specialist / jobwork / company.
The concept is OUTSOURCING.
Outsourcing is supposed to be a bad word, have heard so much during american election, there are some sites and friends of mine who say, it takes away jobs, one of my friends firends friend have lost a job to india , he got bangalored.

so you have heard about 'outsourcing', but you have only half the info, that too it is twisted to suit speaker's agenda

OUTSOURCING do not take away jobs.

it creates options where none existed

some big companies are doing for saving big bucks

but others(most) are doing for survival,

you have been doing outsourcing all your life, from the first diaper cleaning service, the mcdonald home delivery service, boutique, drycleaner all are service which you utilised, they helped you to save time by bringing convenience.

I suggest you to get the small part of the task done outside instead of refusing the project(getting it done locally or abroad, the choice is 100% yours, but remember, your customer is smart, he wants value for his money spent, not all can charge premium for the service)

Lot of assurances have been given, new promises made in in DPA election manifesto

I personally want following projects and problems taken care of

1) Nanguneri SEZ, need to be reactivated and new industries minister and IT minister should invite enterpreneurs and investors, to setup business

2) Construction industry need to be envigorated, raw material cost should be brought down(sand/cement/etc)

3) All citizens should be provided insurance, like how it was provided in Assam

4) Remove all unwanted restrictions on college students be removed. this includes, dress code, mobile phone usage.

There was lot of rush and a big traffic jam at Anna Arivalayam, Headquarters of DMK.

DPA owes a lot to Sun TV for its win.

Probably it is right time for Kalanidhi Maran, Sun TV, to have its seperate identity and Building, Now after IPO they are cash rich.

Vijaykanth's [DMDK] has been consistently 3rd or fourth in most constituency it contested, higher than BJP.

Vijaykanth was a dark horse, following seats(90+) would have swinged against major parties, (DMK,ADMK,INC, CPI) had its votes gone to one of the major alliance

Vijaykanth would be in much demand for next Lok Sabha Polls

Karthik's forward block, was resposible for defeat 3-4 of high profile ADMK candidates in south tamil nadu, Nainar Nagendran(Tirunelveli), P.H. Paul Manoj Pandian(Cheranmahadevi)

for most candidates who retained their seats,winning margin was lower than previous election, one notable exception was Antitha R, Radhakrishnan(Tiruchendur) added 2500+ additional votes margin

Visu could have cost the DMK few seats which it could not retain in chennai, probably urban voters believed what he said in Jaya TV

There was no anti-incumbancy or pro-alliance vote, higher vote turnout could be attributed to Vijaykanths Fan Clubs mobilising, more voters to vote, which I would see as a good step in vibrant democracy, Hope Rajni and Kamal ask their fan club members to mobilise people to vote(not neccasarily for any party alliance)

how to disable firefox update after auto download

This is further to my post in firefox bug.
I am unhappy with auto update feature, especially 1.5.0.3, which mysteriously changes browser behaviour. I had few login problems associated with cookies.
Firefox 1.5.0.3 cookie problem with sessions
though was able to revert back to 1.5.0.2 due to support from other users
but somehow, autoupdate download happened again(not sure if it was my wife, kid or my os), while i was checking my mail. it just informed to restart browser to update to 1.5.0.3 .

This time I had more time to sort things in my own way.
This is how I solved it, Hope some of you benefits too. go to firefox install folder

C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox (in my system)
Delete following files
active-update.xml
updates.xml
updater.ini
and updates folder

you are safe this time :)

last Lok Sabha election washout has taken JJ on defensive, Jayalalitha is not speaking directly again KK, she bought Vaiko, Sarath Kumar, and Visu to do the job.

2) Vaiko has been made a Dummy, people have started believing he took money for joining [ADMK] front

3) Sarath Kumar’s comunity people are opposing him now for joining ADMK, they expected him to join their nadar peravai.

4) All questions raised by DPA were answered by Visu(on yesterdays jaya TV program) and not JJ, it looked very orchestrated, also Visu joining ADMK and supporting every act of JJ now, makes him less credible. Had he done without joining ADMK more people would have trusted him

5) Govt. Employee Dismissals during strike created a ill will among them, they did not allow any electoral malpractice, which led to last lok sabha results. The core issue is not yet solved

this is again a delicate election small swing by undecided voters can change huge fortunes

A higher voting percentage means loss for ruling party, lets see the exit poll and poll percentages in next 2 days.

What ultimately matters is what candidate or party will the voter push the button for in the polling booth.
